We made it to New Orleans. All together a smooth and uneventful ride, apart from some serious Bible
Belt culture shock.
We met Abby's long lost family who graciously hosted us during our time in this fun, musical city. Our first day we tasted the famous po' boy sandwich at the Parkway Bakery and Tavern, coincidentally the same place the Obamas stopped to eat back in 2010. Later that day after settling in we headed out to begin exploring the French Quarter. After a jarring walk down Bourbon St. we settled on following our host's advice and hanging out on Frenchman St. instead.
Frenchman St., we quickly confirmed, is an up-and-coming area with small music clubs and bars as well as a small nighttime crafts fair. Every place we turned was announcing several brass, jazz and r&b bands playing throughout the night. We ended up in three different places listening to a variety of bands, eating and drinking until exhaustion overcame us and we headed back to the house.
We did not managed to get up quite as early as we intended but still made it out to appreciate the bright warm morning back in the French Quarter, this time for a not so light breakfast, an excessive amount of photography and some shopping like good tourists.
That evening we got a taste of Mardi Gras with the first parade of the season, Krewe de Vieux.
After the parade we made a brief appearance at the Krewe de Vieux Ball where the brass bands that had marched now performed to a heavily costumed and intoxicated crowd.
